Boeing Works to Build in the Metaverse
/Boeing’s new “factory of the future” brings together people and technology from around the world with immersive 3D tech, Microsoft HoloLens headsets, digital twins, and more. Over the next two years, it wants to unify design, production, and airline services operations under a single digital ecosystem.
Digital production isn’t brand new at Boeing. Last year, it announced it built the first T-7A jets in simulation, following a model-based design. The T-7A was brought to market in just 36 months.
Boeing isn’t alone in the metaverse—space is effectively endless, afterall. Big players like Airbus, Spirit AeroSystems, and more have invested in digital production technologies. But smaller suppliers, with smaller budgets, feel left behind and pressured by the technology requests.
Immersive technology is not a magic fix for all of Boeing’s problems. The 737 MAX crisis and supply chain shortages are impacting progress and public perception.
TBD if Boeing can get this program off the ground.
