Industrial Robotics Trends for 2023
/The use of drones and robots is becoming increasingly common in industrial settings. Last week, the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) shared the trends it sees shaping robotics and automation in 2023, including:
Energy efficiency
Reshoring
Robots become easier to use
AI and digital automation
Second life for industrial robots
We agree! 2023 can be a big year for robots and drones, especially in industrial applications. Drones and robots are able to do tasks that would otherwise be too dangerous or difficult for a human to do. They can also be used in areas that are not easily accessible, such as high up in the air or underwater.
As other emerging technologies mature—think 5G, AI, cloud computing, etc.—drones and robots become that much more, dare we say, powerful. Industrial robots are also becoming easier to program with low-code and no-code interfaces that make deploying automations faster and cheaper.
Robots have been used in manufacturing for quite some time. But the applications for autonomous drones and robots have expanded greatly into asset inspection, predictive maintenance, offshore energy, and more. They’re even being used to increase real-time data collection for digital twins and other XR applications.
In addition to IFR’s list, here’s what we expect to see in 2023:
More drones and robots, including teams of them working together
Vendors and suppliers offering more out-of-the-box functionality
Money, money: the startup funding behind this type of tech is growing and so is enterprise investment
Continued industry efforts to standardize and build open ecosystems
A watchful eye on regulation, especially for aerial drones via the FAA
New and expanded applications for drones and robots helping in the energy transition
Every year, it seems, innovation in industrial drones and robotics moves faster and faster. What will 2023 bring?
