Reality Check on the Metaverse

The metaverse, of course, isn’t a physical place. But when we ask “where is the metaverse?” that’s not what we’re talking about. We wanted to know the state of the metaverse—where does it stand?

In coverage of a recent report, Forrester pointed out that, “The metaverse doesn’t exist today; only a few precursors do.”

Just like Rome, the metaverse won’t be built in a day.

There’s still a lot of confusion among consumers about what the metaverse even is. Most associate it with Meta—much respect to Facebook’s corporate name change. Those surveyed by Forrester are mixed on levels of excitement and whether the metaverse will be good for society.

While consumers are on the fence, enterprises are halfway over the fence to the greener metaverse side. Many of the most exciting short-term use cases for immersive technology are in the enterprise. Workers will have to learn how to use the technology at work and may begin finding applications for it at home—a phenomenon called reverse consumerization of IT.

The metaverse is nowhere, but it’s also continuing to move forward.
