DOE Launches Carbon Removal Program Funding Details

The U.S. Department of Energy launched a $3.5 billion carbon removal program, dubbed the Regional Direct Air Capture Hubs program. Funding will support four large-scale, regional direct air capture hubs with carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects to “help address the impacts of climate change, creating good-paying jobs and prioritizing community engagement and environmental justice.”

Each hub is expected to be able to capture and store at least a million tons of CO2—a massive increase from the current levels of about .01 million metric tons.

The DOE plans to make the announcement about funding related to these funds in Q4 of FY2022, and released criteria for those seeking the funding.

Hub locations haven’t been decided, but the plan is for at least two of the hubs to be located in “economically distressed communities in the regions of the United States with high levels of coal, oil, or natural gas resources.”

No hubbub to hear here, folks.
