Skydio: A Pioneer in Autonomous Systems

Before delving into the challenges of widespread drone adoption in inspections, Dunn provided insights into Skydio's background. As a software and AI company, Skydio boasts American-made drones trusted by the Department of Defense and various enterprises globally. With over 700 enterprise and public sector customers and a strong focus on autonomous flight, Skydio has positioned itself as a world leader in the field.

Challenges in Drone Adoption for Inspections

Dunn acknowledged that despite the immense potential of drones in infrastructure inspections, not all organizations have fully embraced them. He highlighted key challenges faced by industries, particularly in energy and utilities, including:

  • High costs associated with manned operations

  • Specialized training requirements

  • Vulnerability of traditional drones to environmental factors such as electromagnetic interference

Case Studies

In the session, Dunn shared success stories from Skydio's collaboration with various organizations.

Cyberhawk, a well-known name in the utility space, reported a transition from a two-man crew to a one-man crew, thanks to Skydio's autonomous capabilities.

Japan Infrastructure Waymark achieved a 75% reduction in total bridge inspection costs and a 92% decrease in training costs by leveraging Skydio technology.

Accurate Drone Solutions, specializing in construction, noted increased efficiency with reduced flight and processing times using Skydio drones.

The Power of Autonomy and AI

Skydio's emphasis on autonomy extends beyond mere flight capabilities. The Skydio Autonomy Enterprise offers additional skills, such as super zoom and point of interest (POI), enabling users to capture precise data in challenging environments. The 3D scan skill automates the collection of 3D models for a digital catalog of assets, streamlining inspection workflows.

3D Scanning to Map Structures

A highlight of the discussion was the introduction of Skydio's 3D Scan skill, which automates the collection of 3D data by intelligently navigating the drone through complex structures. The presentation included real-world examples of how this skill simplifies the inspection process, contributing to the creation of digital twins for assets. Skydio Cloud: Managing Data with Ease

Acknowledging the volume of data generated during inspections, Skydio introduced the Skydio Cloud—a platform facilitating data tracking, management, and live video streaming. This comprehensive cloud solution ensures accountability, monitors drone operations, and contributes to the seamless integration of drones into inspection workflows.

Paving the Way for BVLOS

Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations are a significant focus for Skydio. The company is actively working to navigate regulatory challenges and enable BVLOS flights. An example Dunn highlighted was Skydio's collaboration with BNSF Railways, showcasing the potential for remote drone patrols within rail yards, streaming live video to any BNSF location worldwide.

Coming in for Landing

In the EDR Summit session, Dunn highlighted how autonomous drone technology is shaping the future of infrastructure inspections. By addressing the challenges faced by industries, providing powerful autonomy features, and offering comprehensive solutions, suppliers are making drones an integral part of inspection workflows.
