ExxonMobil’s Journey to Build a Digital Reality Ecosystem

At this year’s Industrial Immersive Week, Kyle Daughtry and Athicha Dhanormchitphong from ExxonMobil shared behind the scenes of how ExxonMobil is building its industrial metaverse.

Step inside one of ExxonMobil’s VR initiatives: safety training.

As Daughtry and Dhanormchitphong pointed out, big data has increased substantially in the last decade.

The priority after collecting all of this data is to interpret, understand, and use that data. At Industrial Immersive Week, Daughtry said we’re trying to “answer that question of, ‘What do I actually do with my data when I have it and how do I visualize and understand it?’"

Daughtry continued, “We see a future where an operator can walk out into the field and have access to all of this information at his fingertips in real time, at any point in time. Whether that's on a mobile device that allows him to visually assess the area, or it's on a device on his head that allows him hands-free access to information, that transformation is happening.”

By using 3D, immersive, real-time visual technology, said Dhanormchitphong, “We're reducing cognitive load.”

ExxonMobil’s journey toward working in the metaverse with immersive 3D technology hasn’t happened overnight. It’s been a journey—one that has included proofs of concept, documentation, and cross-enterprise sharing.

Dhanormchitphong said, “with global projects we can say, ‘Hey, there's a lot of value in 3D. You guys are doing stuff, we're doing stuff as well…let's get together. Let's create this whitepaper…What is the life cycle of 3D assets? What's the benefit, the risks, and how do we get there?’”

Now, ExxonMobil looks to a digital reality ecosystem as its North Star.

This focus has helped them move from the chaos of 3D data:

And move toward a more purposeful Capture < Store < Deliver < Consume approach:

And they’ve mapped a vision of how to get to their North Star with more efficient digital consumption and re-use:

ExxonMobil’s journey to digital reality is just that: a journey. They have a North Star and a plan for getting there. Daughtry and Dhanormchitphong presented a staged approach for moving from current state to bringing a long-term vision to life.
